Jane – Alcoholic (Ireland) - Feb 2016

After a year and half battle with alcohol and drugs I came into treatment in January 2016 for 6 weeks. I was broken and full of fear; and in disbelief that this was the start of yet another new year.

I arrived after having done 90 days of sobriety through 12 step meetings, it had then taken me six weeks to get to rehab.

I can honestly say that within an hour of being at the residential rehab centre it felt like home from home. I was surrounded by people who cared for my wellbeing.

The genuine care and dedication from all members of staff towards your recovery is apparent from the beginning. It is so comforting to identify with other addicts who have turned their lives around.

I left the treatment centre in late February and what an incredible experience it was. I now really do understand the meaning of the expression, “If you want what we have and are willing to go to any lengths to get it then you are ready to take certain steps”.

Everyone’s journey to get here is different and not everyone picks things up as easily as others, but having the sincere desire of wanting a different way of life and with the help of the experienced therapists and the rest of the professional team the broken person who walked in here six weeks ago could never have imagined feeling how I do today.

You never forget the people who help put your pieces back together when you are on the floor and I will forever hold a very special place in my heart for all the staff as I face my onward journey.

  • Jack - Gambling Addiction (UK) - Apr 2021

On my 18th birthday I was taken by some friends to a betting shop, I put a bet on a horse race – and I won. Amongst all the other excitement of the day it didn’t really register but about a year later I found myself inside a different type of betting shop, more like an arcade. It was classed as a casino though I wouldn’t call it a casino as I didn’t think it was posh or flashy enough – it was a big shop full of slot machines all with flashing lights and ringing noises and I spent about an hour shoving coins in the slots

  • Alison, Alcoholic (UK) - July 2015

Time passes by so quickly and so does life. Five years ago, I was a mess, I had lost my job and nearly my family. I knew I had to do something, but never understood what a huge step it would be getting sober. I came to Spain for treatment in July 2010, still a bit worse for wear from the wine on the plane and feeling scared and thinking am I really going to be able to do this?!.
